For all those who are waiting to see those cute mannerisms that she used to have during her heydays, Manju Warrier tries desperately to bring it back in director Rojin Thomas’ Jo & the Boy. But it’s better if the actor realizes that she is trying to repeat what she did some fifteen years back!

Amidst plenty of quotable quotes, motivational messages and an unconvincing plot, her efforts to be peppy and funny look far from attractive.

Joan (Manju Warrier) is an animator, living in a picturesque locale, and has big dreams to achieve in life. Somewhere in between a ten-year-old boy named Criz (Sanoop Santhosh) becomes part of her life.

She helps him build an amusement arcade, while trying to present an idea to an animation company. The live wire kid inspires her to create a cartoon character and that seems to be a turning point in her life. The ensuing confusions, issues, fights and the ultimate win is what the makers are trying to narrate here.

It would have been fine if the film was made as a kids’ tale, like that lovable Philips & the Monkey Pen, which was genuinely charming and fresh. But that doesn’t happen here. At about 155 minutes, this one is too artificial and tiring to enjoy.

The script is shaky and predictable from the word go, with too many clichés. The situations have been presented with too much seriousness but at no point of time it does not start affecting the viewer in any way.

Manju Warrier gives the feeling that she is trying a bit too hard to look young with her loud makeup and the efforts to present herself as ebullient. Sanoop Santhosh is mostly natural.

Jo & the Boy lets you down as a pretentious attempt to present itself as lot much than what it actually is. There are some moments here and there for sure, but it would need real patience to enjoy them. Now, decide on your own.
