Joker review- A delicious little treat

Joker is a true gem, a bold and brave experiment by writer-director Raju Murugan.

Rarely do we see movies, which bridge the gap between good writing and film-making in Kollywood. Nevertheless, Murugan's writing is warm and insightful and the cast is uniformly excellent. He keeps a breezy, light-hearted tone throughout, infusing a hint of humour even in the decidedly emotional bits. It’s only the film’s 130 minute running time that is the only indulgence here.

Mannar Mannan (Guru Somasundaram)  is considered as a joker in his village as he declares himself as People's President and raises  voice against corrupt in his locality.  Mannan  is mentally disturbed due to a cruel incident that happened to his wife Malliga (Ramya Pandian), thanks to the system and its loopholes. Due to the neglegence of politicians and government officials, Malliga is struggling for life and is in coma.

The rest of the film is an emotional roller coaster ride of Mannar Mannan and his two like minded friends, Ponoonjal (Ramasamy) and Isai (Gayathri Krishna) as they file a petition for the mercy killing of Malliga in Supreme Court.

Raju Murugan's whip-smart dialogues targeting all the political parties and flaws in the system is enjoyable in the first half whereas post intermission, the film turns emotional with the flashback love story between Mannan  and Malliga,  their struggle for basic sanitation and dream of building proper toilet are sure to melt your hearts. Especially the strong climax dialogue explaining who the real jokers are, is a tight slap on our system and society.

Guru Somasundaram has literally given us a fully flesh-and-blood performance as the innocent Mannan. This is easily his best performance since Aaranya Kaandam and deserves a big pat on his back. In fact,  all the actors are real on screen. We are very much there with the characters that we laugh, cry and travel with them.

Technically, Chezhiyan 's cinematography is a huge strength capturing the tiniest and most insignificant moments and presenting them in all their honest glory. Songs and background score of Sean Roldon is class apart.

Overall,  Joker is a must watch for ardent cinema lovers. Give it a chance, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
