Kaaval review - Fails to impress

Nithin Renji Panicker

Star Cast

Suresh Gopi, Renji Panicker

Kasaba director Nithin Renji Panicker is back with Kaaval, which is about two older men who were once all-powerful.

The story begins with Antony (Renji Panicker), who has lost a leg and is heavily into debt. He haplessly watches his daughter being harassed by a moneylender and her engagement ceremony turning out to be a mess. The cops are also having fierce enmity towards Antony, due to some of his deeds from the past.

He now decides to seek the help of his erstwhile partner Thampan (Suresh Gopi).

Thampan and Antony, we are told, were once ruling a certain area in a high range town and they even solved the issues of natives there like a local panchayat. The duo fought with the police and never dared to take law into their own hands when it came to settling scores with their rivals.

And now, the good old days are just a faint memory. By the time Thampan comes, it’s way too late. Thampan vows to protect Antony’s children hereafter.

The writer-director does manage to make the going engaging, though at times one gets the feeling that the story moves along on predictable lines.

The dons were supposed to take on everyone with their might in their reigning days, which include some armed Maoists, but we never feel like they had all the strength and power to do so. Instead, their might is shown through some heavy-duty dialogues. This is pretty disappointing as some thrilling scenes could have made it all look convincing. The visuals and the music are good.

Suresh Gopi tries hard to remind the viewers about some characters from his ‘action hero’ days. Renji Panicker looks impressive. The rest of the cast have done their parts in a fine way.

Kaaval could perhaps have been better but has some fine moments for sure. For the fans of Suresh Gopi’s fiery dialogues and action, there are flashes of all those.

Verdict:  Average
