Movie Title

Kalavani 2

Director

Sarkunam

Star Cast

Vemal, Oviya, Ilavarasu, Saranya Ponvannan

Kalavani 2 is not a exact sequel of Sarkunam-Vemal's 2010  sleeper hit. The director has only used the four key characters Arikki (Vemal), his parents(Saranya Ponvannan, Ilavarasu), Maheshwari (Oviya), and Panchayat (Ganja Karuppu).

Kalavani 2 fails to create half the impact of the first part, the film sails at a sluggish space without any life. The characters are not lively unlike the original. The only positive aspect of the film is the nativity factor which has been retained by Sarkunam without any compromise. The camera work of Masani is quite impressive with uncanny angles and frame division.

As said earlier, Vemal plays a happy go lucky guy Arikki who decided to contest in the local body elections so that he can get money from the rival camps. But to Arikki's surprise, both the veteran politicians don't even consider him as a competition. One of the two politicians is a maternal uncle even challenges Arikki to win the election and if things change, our hero should go out of his native village. Can Arikki prove everyone wrong?

Vemal is perfect for Arikki, it's a tailor made role for him so there is nothing much to blame on his performance. Oviya doesn't have big scope in the film and she sleepwalks throughout. In the original, the romance portion between Vemal and Oviya (who was looking fresh then) was the highlight but in the sequel, their combination scenes test our patience. RJ Vigneshkanth is another big let-down in the film, he fails evoke even a slight smile on our face. Among the other actors, Saranya Ponvannan and Ilavarasu have scored well while the rest of them are just okay.

Overall, Kalavani 2 is a below average comedy entertainer which may work only with audiences who are fans of rural commercial entertainers.
