Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham review: A funny ride

Rathesh Balakrishnan Poduval

Star Cast

Nivin Pauly, Grace Antony

Director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval, who made an impressive debut with Android Kunjappan ver 5.25, is back with a fun filled entertainer Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham with Nivin Pauly in the lead.

From the titles itself, the narrative has been set as if this is a comedy drama on a stage and the mood continues so, all along.

For instance, the director’s name is mentioned by the announcer without the surname. When someone reminds the announcer about missing ‘Poduval’ in the announcement, pat comes the reply, “I can’t say caste surnames”.

Haripriya (Grace Antony) is an ex TV serial actress who is married to a junior artiste and an acting tutor named Pavithran (Nivin Pauly). They have been married for two and a half years but Haripirya feels Pavithran is not romantic and has never taken her for a holiday yet.

Pavithran had taken a loan for his friend giving Haripriya’s costly earring, which she got from her grandmother. Now that it has been sold in auction, he cheats her by buying a cheaper ‘rolled gold ear ring’.

Later, as per the advice of Shivan (Sudeesh), Pavithran takes Haripriya to a hotel, Hilltop at Munnar. The rest of the story happens at the hotel, where some dramatic incidents ensue with more characters joining the action.

With dialogues that are mostly banters or funny counters, the script is packed. Ratheesh adds some popular terms so frequently used by the social media, like ‘political correctness’ and ‘body shaming’ for instance, in a smart way. The visuals and the music suits the presentation style very well.

In a role which has no heroism whatsoever and is mostly funny or at times silly, where he has to take potshots even at himself, Nivin Pauly gets into the shoes of his character superbly.

Grace Antony is in fine form and comes up with a good show. The rest of the cast, including Vinay Forrt, Rajesh Madhavan, Sudheesh, Vincy Alocious and Jaffer Idukki are good.

Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham is dramatic, colourful and perhaps loud at times. Keep that in mind while watching this movie and you are in for a joyous ride from start to finish. Try this one!

Verdict: A funny ride
