Kanithan review: Run Of The Mill

TN Santhosh

Star Cast

Atharvaa Murali, Catherine Tresa

It’s quite common for protégés to follow the route taken by their gurus-Debutant director TN Santhosh an assistant to AR Murugadoss follows the Thuppakki style of film making but too many songs and loopholes in the script prevent Kanithan from being a perfect racy action entertainer.

Gautham (Atharvaa Murali) is an engineering graduate but works as a TV journalist in a small channel. Interestingly Gautham's dad (Naren) is a news reader with Doordarshan and grand dad was a news reader in All India Radio.

Just like AR Murugadoss’ recent movies, here too the film moves at a leisure pace in the beginning, where hero falls in love with the heroine (Catherine Tresa) at first sight and dances with her in a pub.

When everything goes well, Gautham gets arrested by cops for cheating banks by getting lakhs of rupees with fake documents and degree certificates. The rest of the film is all about how Gautham tracks down the master mind(Tarun Arora) behind the fake certificate scam.

Director TN Santhosh is definitely talented and one could feel it with the 90 minutes nonstop mind game and racy action sequences. Of course, the characterizations and scenes have heavy Thuppakki hangover yet the film engages us with the effective portions. When things start moving at a rapid pace, Santhosh introduces unwanted birthday celebration sequence followed by a song, which definitely tests our patience.

The first thirty minutes of the film is filled with two songs and silly romantic portions, which could have been avoided. To be honest, Kanithan is not a bad film and it has a good theme with solid engaging moments but why spoil it with unnecessary songs?

Atharvaa Murali has all necessary qualities to become a mass action hero. The actor effortlessly performs action sequences and looks comfortable with the racy steps too, however he has to work on his dialogue delivery and comic portions to make it big. Catherine Tresa looks cute in the movie but sadly has nothing much to perform.

Tarun Arora looks extremely good as the baddie but again, one could feel the Vidyut Jamwal hangover from Thuppakki. The rest of the actors including Karunakaran, Naren and Baghyaraj go through their motions and disappear.

Technically Arvind Krishna’s stylish cinematography is a big asset for the movie and ‘Yeppa Chappa’ song too might work well with masses. But rest of the songs in the film are neither hummable and turn out to be speed breakers. Background score is just average.

Overall, Kanithan tries hard to satisfy multiple agendas that telling an interesting story becomes secondary to everything else.
