Kurup review: An engaging thriller

Srinath Rajendran

Star Cast

Dulquer Salmaan, Sobhita Dhulipala

Director Srinath Rajendran’s Kurup has been inspired from the life of Kerala’s most infamous fugitive ever, Sukumara Kurup, the main accused in the murder of film representative Chacko in 1984.

Dulquer Salmaan comes in the title role and he has been presented with a shade of gray all along in spite of all the flamboyance and charm. Well, that’s all we would reveal as more details could hamper the fun.

The story begins during Kurup’s younger days, when he was Gopi Krishnan and into lesser adventures, like faking marksheets to fool his parents. He manages to join the Indian Air Force as an Airman.

With his eagerness to cheat anyone in order to get wealthy, Gopi Krishnan aka GK (for trivia lovers, you wouldn’t miss the relevance of the name, which was also what Mammootty’s character from New Delhi was called) quits the Air Force to look for more fortune in the Gulf, as Sudhakara Kurup.

In between, he meets Sarada (Sobhita Dhulipala), falls in love with her and the two gets married.

Kurup comes from the Gulf with a plan to fake his own murder to get the insurance amount, which goes horribly wrong. And from financial misappropriations and smuggling, Kurup now faces a murder charge. The police is all set to nab him and he flees.

The story of Kurup has been well known to Malayalis for several decades now. There has been tales of him appearing at several places even during recent years, of him being dead and then the endless efforts from the police to catch him going in vain.

The movie adds some style and some minor twists to the already known stories of the fugitive and presents an engaging drama. The visuals, the music and the art designs enhance the effect.

In a role where his character is a noted criminal, Dulquer Salmaan shines, with confidence and style. Watch out for a fabulous show from Shine Tom Chacko. Sobhitha Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas and Saiju Kurup have also done their parts very well.

Kurup is not an easy film to make considering almost everyone knows the facts and the fables that the story is based on. Still it is to be applauded that this has been made into a gripping adventure drama. Watch it!

Verdict: An engaging thriller
