Arun Vijay, Karthik, Danushika, Santhanam
Arun Vijay has been knocking on the doors of stardom for a long, long time. Finally he managed to get some amount of recognition at the box-office with Malai Malai. Now he is back with his next mass masala Maanja Velu directed by A Venkatesh, which has all ingredients that made a lot of ordinary actors, superstars in Kollywood.
It is also the comeback vehicle for one of the finest actors of the 80?s and 90?s Karthik, in a character role along with his buddy Prabhu who has been doing it for the last three years. The film looks like a remake of Gopichand- Jagapathy Babu action packed Telugu masala Lakshyam
The formula film has been made to highlight Arun Vijay as an action hero, with the heroine telling her friends-?he is handsome daredevil with terrific biceps? !!! Maanja Velu (Arun Vijay) is unbeatable in whatever he does and lives in Tiruchi. His father ( Vijayakumar) is a crusader journalist while elder brother is a daring and upright ACP Subhash Chandra Bose (Karthik).
All of them live together, one happy family with Anni (Anu Hassan) and Amma (Meera Krishnan) and the five year old niece. Some fun and frolic as Anjali (Danushika) after an initial spat falls for our hero.
Enter the bad guys who run the town Umapathi (Vaigai Chandrasekhar) and his comic assistant (Vasu Vikram) and a cop (Riaz Khan). They have their finger in all nefarious activities and soon run foul of Bose, who starts making life miserable for the villains. They gang up and kill Bose and his younger brother takes revenge, with the tacit support of the new ACP (Prabhu).
There is a comedy track in the film by Santhanam, Shakeela, Ganja Karuppu, Lollu Sabha Manohar, which is a scream. The spoof on Nadodigal is pure slapstick comedy at its best. Mani Sharma is totally out of form and fails to deliver his regular peppy numbers. Kanal Kannan does his regular flying stunt choreography, in the climax one kick is enough to sent the villain flying into the air like a Diwali rocket!
Karthik and Prabhu has a all world charm about them and is the major plus in the acting department. Arun Vijay does everything required to be a super action hero, while new girl Danushika lacks glamour and can?t act for nuts.
On the whole director Venkatesh has dished out a an average run of the mill mass masala cocktail which is quite entertaining in the first half but fizzles out in the second half with a predictable long drawn out climax.
Verdict- Mass masala
Time pass comedy entertainer
Average comedy entertainer
Decent rural family entertainer
Soubin Shahir and Mamta Mohandas shine in this conventional film
