Mafia review: All style and no substance

Karthick Naren

Star Cast

Arun Vijay, Prasanna, Priya Bhavani Shankar

Director Karthick Naren's Mafia is a stylish action thriller in which the glossy presentation and gimmicks work at a slick running time of 112 minutes. But does the film deliver what is promised? Not really, as the film lacks a riveting plot.

Aryan (Arun Vijay) is a young, upright officer in the Narcotics Bureau and it’s told that he had joined the force after his brother goes missing due to drug addiction. The main focus of Aryan and his team is to nab the head of the local drug cartel. In the operation, Aryan loses his superior officer and a friendly neighbour (Thalaivasal Vijay) who is also a social activist but the clue provided by the latter leads him to Divakar (Prasanna), the head of the drug supply chain in Tamil Nadu. The cat and mouse game begins now...

The first fifteen minutes of the film test our patience as Karthick spends too much time on the random character establishments (although he connects all those characters in the latter half). The film picks up only after Prasanna comes into play and how the two masterminds start battling out with their respective forces.

To be honest, both Prasanna and Arun Vijay scores in terms of screen presence and looks.  Arun, a fine actor looks stone-faced throughout and we guess that was what the director wanted him to do! Prasanna is more real and natural and his effortless style suits his character. The best part of the film is the 7 minutes in the end where a twist is set for part-2!

Priya Bhavani Shankar's character is half baked and she is ok. Arun's family members look like caricatures. All the characters speaks Tanglish and there is not even one nicely choreographed action sequences for masses to root for!  On the whole, Mafia sinks under the weight of too much attitude and lack of good script. The actors try hard but it's impossible to infuse life into such a mindless film. Watch it at your own risk!
