Malaiyur is a hilly village of toiling poor farmers who are treated like slave labours by the rich landlord (Kota Sreenivasa Rao). A farmer (Vijayakumar) discovers a pot of gold while digging the fields, the landlord kills him. His son the daredevil Mambattiyan (Prasanth), wearing a huge pendant takes revenge by killing the landlord at the annual temple festival.
The government declares Mambattiyan as an outlaw as he goes to the forest hide-outs and takes on the local police. The beautiful Kannatha (Meera Jasmine) slowly falls for him seeing the goodness in his character, though the village siren Sornam (Mumaith Khan) has a soft corner for him.
Soon nemesis comes in the form of IG Special Task Force Ranjith (Prakashraj),who wants Mambattiyan dead or alive!
There are other actors to glorify Mambattiyan character like Chinna Pannai (Vadivelu), local country medicine woman (Kalairani), a copycat thief (Riaz Khan) and gang members. But it is Prasanth who stands out inthe lead role and is the major plus of the movie, especially in the emotionally charged climax scene. Prakash Raj and Meera Jasmine are perfect foil to the hero character.
Technically the film is slick with Don Max?s editing and Shaji Kumar?s lush camera work. Thaman?s background score and the re-mix of Ilayaraja song from the original fits in with the mood of the film.
On the downside, the script of director Thiagarajan is not engaging like the original. People are drawing parallels between Mambattiyan legend and that of the more modern Veerappan saga, as the trauma and drama are the same.
