Mannar Vagaiyara review: Entertaining to an extent

Boopathy Pandian

Star Cast

Vemal, Anandhi, Chandini, Karthik a Kumar, Robo Shankar, Vamsi

Vemal is back to his home ground with Mannar Vagaiyara, which has the caste flavor with usual rural masala ingredients to satisfy 'B' and 'C' center audiences.

After completing his final law semester exam Madhiyazhagan (Vemal) is waiting for his results. Madhi belongs to the respectable family in his locality mainly because of his dad (Prabhu). Things go well until Madhi and his brother (Karthik Kumar) fall in love with llaiyarani (Anandhi) Kalairani (Chandini), who belong to the influential family of another community. When Kalairani's family decides to marry her to a guy from their own caste, Madhi's brother commits suicide so our hero stops the marriage and fulfills his brother's love life. What happens next? Watch on the big screen to know more...

Bhaagamathie (Tamil) review: Film belongs to Anushka Shetty | Nimir Review: A faithful remake of the original | Padmaavat review (Tamil): An artistic masterpiece | Padmaavat review (Bollywood): A visual treat without a soul

Mannar Vagaiyara is not a game changing film in Tamil cinema but it's entertaining to an extent, thanks to Robo Shankar's comedy portions in the first half. The second half of the film is also decent for a rural entertainer. What really irks us is why the filmmakers are explicitly glorifying casteism in their films? They could've simply told us a story without giving any hint about the community. We can't blame them much because such films do work in the rural territories...

After a long time, Vemal looks energetic in Mannar Vagaiyara, the actor has got back his lost form with this film. Robo Shankar is another hero of the film while the bubbly Anandhi has also contributed for the comic portions in the first half. The rest of the actors including Prabhu, Saranya Ponvannan, Vamsi Krishna and Jayprakash fit the bill.

Jakes Bejoy's 'Thattana' number is hummable and his background score is adequate for a rural entertainer. Cinematography by PG Muthiah perfectly captures the greenish village locales but the editing team could've chopped off 15-20 minutes in the film.

Overall, Mannar Vagaiyara is neither good to appreciate nor bad to ignore. If you are a fan of Vemal's hit rural films, you might end up finding Mannar Vagaiyara a watchable flick.
