Master review: An enjoyable action entertainer

Director

Lokesh Kanakaraj

Star Cast

Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika, Arjun Das

Lokesh Kanagaraj has used the superstardom of Thalapathy Vijay and the satirical swag of Vijay Sethupathi to deliver the age-old Good vs Evil story within the commercial cinema format with Master. But the film ends up as an average watch with neither any fan moments nor mass elements associated with Vijay films like comedy, romance, or introduction song.

JD aka John Durairaj (Vijay) is an alcoholic professor who has an unknown past and he often tells a filmy story when someone asks him about the reason behind his addiction. The film begins with solid establishment scenes of Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi) who becomes a merciless beast due to his dark childhood at the Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre.

Bhavani uses kids and staff at the home for nefarious activities. Meanwhile, violence breaks out at JD's college during elections. Unfortunately, JD gives an undertaking letter that he would go out of the college if any mishap happens during the elections. Now, JD gets transferred to the observation center as a teacher that is under the control of Bhavani. Now, the battle begins...

To be honest, Master is not the best work of Lokesh Kanagaraj. But Vijay on the other hand has experimented in a new format unlike his routine formula mass films giving good screen space to the antagonist played brilliantly by Vijay Sethupathi. In fact, Vijay takes the backseat in many scenes so that Sethupathi’s character is elevated. Arjun Das as Das has good screen space and he makes a mark.

Names like Shanthanu, Andrea, and Gauri Kishan have nothing to do. And heroine Malavika Mohanan is a big disappointment as she cannot act and has a single expression throughout. On the downside the film is too long, the writing is not watertight and the film gets tiring in the second half.  Graphics of the container lorry chasing scene is disappointing.

The climax combat fight between the lead actors is a scream.  However, some of the best scenes are when Vijay goes to meet Bhavani in his den and another is the phone conversation between the two men when Bhavani is taking a bath!

Vijay has amazing agility and he shines in the action, dance, comedy, and emotional sequences. But the biggest attraction is undeniably Vijay Sethupathi. His swag is impeccable and he effortlessly carries the evil Bhavani with his incredible screen presence.

Technically, Master is super slick. Cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan and music composer Anirudh Ravichander are the other two silent heroes of the film that they elevate the mass scenes with their contribution. Anirudh’s BGM is top class and the songs are peppy.

Overall, Master is an enjoyable action entertainer with passable flaws

Verdict: An enjoyable action entertainer
