Mersal- A crowd-pleaser that knows exactly who its audience is!

Star Cast

Vijay, SJSuryah, Nithya Menen, Samantha, Kajal

Thalapathy Vijay’s Mersal  is a formulaic mass masala action film with a strong social message, whistle worthy moments, eye candy heroines and grand visuals. This film relies squarely on the charm of its leading man to pull off its over-the-top tone.

An innocent yet fearless village rebel Thalapathy (Vijay) gets back stabbed by a greedy doctor Daniel (SJ Suryah). But three decades later, Thalapathy 's two sons--magician Vetri and doctor Maaran (both the roles played by Vijay) take revenge against the cold-blooded Daniel, who runs a leading hospital network.

Meyaadha Maan review: A rom-com which works due to good writing

Mersal belongs to Vijay and he totally steals the show with his comic timing, mass dialogue delivery, powerful screen presence and racy moves. The magician will be loved by kids while the rebel dad will be embraced by the ardent fans of the actor. Thalapathy is easily the best mass character written for Vijay and he totally nails it, the 'Madurai' slang adds to that extra swag. Doctor Maaran has nothing much to do, but join the party in climax.

The two heroines (Samantha and Kajal) have limited screen space  with few scenes and a  song each with the hero.  Nithya Menen has the most important, performance driven role, needless to say she is outstanding (though she looks bloated). SJ Suryah once again shines as a ruthless villain but his characterization is stereotypical. Compared to his recent films, Vadivelu try to inject some chuckles while Sathyaraj has nothing much to do and is wasted.

On the downside, Atlee did not have a solid story but has only focused on packaging it in a  glossy manner and playing to the galleries. Right from Vijaykanth's Ramana to umpteen other mass films, we have seen the similar premise of malpractices in private hospitals and the hero trying to bring money-minded doctors to light. The duration (2 hours 50 minutes) is a bigger villain than SJ Suryah in the film.

GK Vishnu's grand visuals, especially in the flash back portions deserve an applause but apart from the 'Aalaporan'  track, Rahman’s work is just passable. Songs are picturised in a grand manner and on the whole, Mersal  works purely because of Vijay and his charismatic screen presence. A perfect Diwali outing for the entire family.

Mersal review: Verdict-A crowd-pleaser that knows exactly who its audience is!
