Mikhael review: A fairly engaging flick

Haneef Adeni

Star Cast

Nivin Pauly, Unni Mukundan, Sidhique

If you have watched The Great Father that he directed and Abrahaminte Santhathikal which he scripted, it is pretty much sure what to expect from a Haneef Adeni film. In Mikhael, he does what he is good at, keeping the viewers guessing with twists and surprises.

With so many characters, plots and subplots, it takes some time before the real storyline starts unravelling. A few cops swing into action to bust some smugglers in the beginning but some murders raise big questions.

Mikhael (Nivin Pauly) is a doctor working in the casualty of a plush hospital. He is pretty upset that his mother got married again after his father’s tragic death in an accident. He is very close to his younger sister Jennifer.

Why Cheat India review: Fails to convey a strong social message | Bombairiya review: Serious message lost in this screwball farce | The Lift Boy review: Simple yet heart-warming

A minor scuffle at school with a classmate changes the situations all of a sudden for Jennifer. This initiates a bloody battle and the hero takes charge of it all after a while. When the law refuses to help him he decides to make things right on his own.

With a rather okay script, the director tries really hard to manage with style. Colourful frames, loud music, slow motion and spinning cars, it’s all there in plenty. Even then, the film has its fine moments that can affect the viewer.

As a doting brother, who will go to any extent for his loved ones, Nivin Pauly performs with confidence and panache. He scores big time during lighter moments and is convincing in the action sequences. Among the rest of the cast, it is Sidhique who scores big time with a fabulous show. He is cold-blooded and induces fear in the minds of his rivals.

Unni Mukundan looks handsome and shows his chiseled abs so often, but has a limited screen space. Manjima Mohan too has a brief role. J D Chakravarthy, Suraj Venjarammoodu, Shanthi Krishna and the young actors perform impressively.

Verdict: Fairly engaging
