Movie Title

M. Sivasankar

Star Cast

Sathya, Karthik Jaya, Bhagyanjali, Varsha

M Sivasankar?s Nellu based on a real incident has been packaged as a documentary with mass masala!

The mix has gone horribly wrong. Remember the film had gone to the revising committee to finally get censored with an UA certificate.

The film is based on the Kizhvenmani massacre that happened in the late 60?s in a village near Thanjavur. In the climax of the film there is a scene in which scores of dalit agricultural laborers, including women and children, are burnt alive by upper caste men for demanding a wage hike.

Director Sivasankar has taken a sensitive issue and trivialized it by adding six songs which come every 10 minutes. A waterfall dream song of hero Sathya along with Bhagyanjali oozes oomph.

The story is about Periyavar a leftist leader who brings together a group of dalit farmers in a village who revolt against the activities of Periya Thambi an upper class feudal landlord. This leads to a class struggle which finally culminates in the cold blooded murder and burning down of 42 dalit people.

The film ends abruptly, as many scenes of the caste carnage seems to have been deleted by the censors. The idea seems to be to string together a masala movie with songs, dance, fights and crass comedy and market it as a ?cause film?.

Verdict- Avoidable
