Nimir Review: A faithful remake of the original
Udhayanidhi Stalin, Namitha Pramod, Samuthirakani, Mahendran, MS Baskar, Karunakaran, Parvathy
It's quite surprising to see Udhayanidhi Stalin coming out of his comfort zone to attempt a realistic-drama like Nimir, a remake of Malayalam film Maheshinte Prathikaaram. Though Nimir is no way near the magic of the original, the makers have delivered the film with honesty and it works to an extent.
National Selvam (Udhayanidhi) is an innocent young photographer, who doesn’t have any big aim in life. But Selvam’s dad Shanmugham (Mahendran) is a passionate photographer who still has the thirst to capture something magical in his old age.
Selvam’s only happiness is to marry his longtime ladylove Valli (Parvathy Nair) but she dumps him after finding a boy from an affluent family. Even before Valli’s rejection, Selvam gets embarrassed in front of his friends and people in his village after a stranger (Samuthirakani) beats him in a busy market. Our protagonist takes an oath that he won’t wear slippers until he gives it back to the stranger. Adding fuel to the fire, a young girl (Malar) tells Selvam that he is not good at his job. How Selvam recovers from his low time and wears the slipper forms the crux of the second half…
There are a few films which would work only if made in certain locations and Maheshinte Prathikaaram is one such film. Nevertheless, director Priyadarshan has tried his best to cater the same script for the Tamil audiences. As said earlier, everything about Nimir is honest and there is no compromise but the ‘magic’ is missing. Maybe because everything is well explained and spoon-fed here whereas, in the original, things were subtle and the rest was left to the audience to understand. Also, the Tenkasi people’s lifestyle is not explored, we only see it in the locations and couldn’t feel the nativity. For instance, all the actor's are comfortably speaking only normal Tamil and there is no specific slang for them. One would notice all these flaws in the first half but once the characters are established and the screenplay moves towards the main conflict, scenes start flowing coherently.
Performance wise, Nimir is Udhayanidhi’s career best, he has given his heart and soul to the character. As an actor, Udhay has evolved so much and delivered a commendable performance. Among the two heroines, Namitha Pramod impresses us a lot with her bubbly performance whereas Parvathy Nair is just okay. The rest of the actors including Mahendran, MS Baskar, Karunakaran, and Samuthirakani have given what is exactly required for their characters.
Ekambaram’s camera aesthetically shoots the effervescent natural landscape of Tenkasi. Music is another important hero—songs by Darbuka Siva and Ajaneesh and background score by Ronnie R Raphael are brilliant.
Overall, Nimir would work for audiences who haven’t seen the original but for others, it would be an average watch.

#Nimir : @paro_nair gets the beautiful melody, Eppodhum Unmael Nyabagam, with @Udhaystalin in the 1st half. Expecting it to become a Hit on music channels.
