Editor Appu N Bhattathiri makes his directorial debut with Nizhal, which is essentially a mystery thriller.

First Class judicial magistrate John Baby (Kunchacko Boban) has suffered an accident and is wearing a mask to protect his injured nose. When he rejoins duty, he is facing certain post-trauma effects for which he consults a psychologist, who happens to be his best friend’s wife.

She narrates a strange incident where a young student named Nithin (Izin Hash) at school, where she is a consultant, narrates a murder story. John decides to meet the kid, in the presence of his single mother, Sharmila (Nayanthara).

The story narrated by the kid shocks John and he decides to do an investigation on it, with the help of local police. This unveils the mystery behind the disappearance of a firebrand youth in Karuvatta, several years back.

There are no chances for the kid to know about the locations or the happenings. Naturally, this becomes a puzzle for John Baby, who becomes friendly with Sharmila and Nithin.

Then, the kid narrates the story of another murder.

There is indeed an interesting plot here but the problem is with the writing and the execution. The settings look too perfect and the detailing is excessive at times. The efforts to generate laughs in between seem forced. Also, the proceedings inside the courtroom are a bit too dramatic.

Still, what works in favour of the movie is the acting part. Kunchacko Boban makes his character look believable. Though her character has not been developed well, Nayanthara performs the role charmingly. Child actor Izin Hash plays Nithin with lots of confidence.

Nizhal has its moments for sure but one gets the feeling that it could have been much more with better writing. Having said that, this one is a fine one-time watch.

Verdict: Watchable
