Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela review: Engrossing and heartwarming

Althaf Salim

Star Cast

Nivin, Lal, Shanti Krishna, Ahaana

Debutant director Althaf Salim’s Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela is an entertainer that is packed with humour, though it is handles a serious theme.

Chacko (Lal) and his wife Sheela (Shanthi Krishna) are happily settled in Kerala, after their stint in Kuwait. Their lives take a rather unexpected turn after Sheela finds a lump in one of her breasts. The couple is worried if it is cancer but is scared to go to the doctor.

Their son, the happy go lucky Kurien Chacko (Nivin Pauly) is called by his mother to return home from London, where he is working. But the couple doesn’t know how to disclose the matter to him, or to their daughters.

Velipadinte pusthakam review: A fairly decent, feel good entertainer | Kurangu Bommai review: A well-made crime thriller | Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan review: Brave, bright film with heart in right place | Paisa Vasool review: A film only meant for Balayya fans | Puriyatha Puthir review: A boring ride | Pullikkaaran Staraa review: Offensive, amateurish and at times, seriously disturbing

As the parents go through all the tensions, their children are busy with their own lives.

It’s a highly relatable story, which has been narrated with impressive maturity by debutant director Althaf Salim. The story unfurls with a string of lighter moments, stitched together without losing the balance and performed brilliantly by the film’s cast.

With delicious visuals and good music, this one is a joyous ride that also narrates some stark realities and unprecedented situations that happens in life and could shake you up all on a sudden.

Nivin Pauly, who incidentally is also the producer of the film, joins as one of the performers more than playing a hero. He is a lazy bum, who munches packets of chips and has no specific goals in life. Nivin steals your heart with a lovely show.

Shanthi Krishna makes a terrific comeback playing a college lecturer whose life turn upside down, when she first knows about the illness. Lal comes up with one of the finest performances of his career unlike his usual characters as a loving husband, who is terribly affected by the situation and barely knows how to handle it.

Srinda, who plays the couple’s eldest daughter and Siju Wilson, playing her husband, have some of the funniest lines in the film. Ahaana Krishna, Krishna Sankar and Sharafuddeen also scores well. Aiswarya Lakshmi, who plays Nivin Pauly’s pair, is fine but has a rather limited role to play.

Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela
is the kind of feel good entertainer that has its heart at the right place. It’s funny and has the emotional moments that could leave you with moist eyes. Grab a box of popcorn and head straight to this one. Don’t miss this cute little gem.
