The Tamil Nadu Multiplex and Theater Owners Association have proposed a new share percentage for films featuring known actors. Stars like Rajinikanth, Ajith and Vijay have been placed in the all important Tier 1, their films will enjoy comparatively higher percentage.
Stars like Suriya, Jayam Ravi, Dhanush, STR, and Vijay Sethupathi are featured in the Tier 2.Allthe other actors including Kamal Haasan, Vikram, Vishal etc are bracketed in Tier 3. In the first week, theaters in ‘A’ centers will give 60% of the revenue to the distributors who release films of Rajini, Ajith, and Vijay whereas theaters in ‘B’ and ‘C’ centers will give 65% revenue. For the films featuring tier two heroes, ‘A’ center theaters’ share is 55% and the rest of theaters will provide 50% in the first week.
As the list is out, fans of Kamal Haasan, Vikram, Karthi, and Vishal are shocked as their favorite actors were not in the race and they have been ranked below many actors who entered into the industry much later. It clearly shows that box-office ratings are more important than anything else and an actor has to be saleable to survive.
On the other side, producers and distributors are shocked as this new share percentage will affect their overall revenue.Tiruppur Subramaniyam, president of the association said : " We have decided to streamline the revenue sharing between stakeholders. Our maintenance cost of running theatres is going up so we are forced to revise revenue sharing agreement. A meeting has been scheduled for the second week of June where will discuss and take a decision."
