Director Priyadarshan has created several memorable gems with Mohanlal in the past that are still popular with the viewers. But the duo has not been in their best form of late. Considering this in mind, Oppam is a welcome change.

Jayaraman (Mohanlal) is a visually challenged man, working as a lift operator in an apartment complex. A retired judge (Nedumudi Venu), who is residing in one of the apartments there, shares some crucial secrets with Jayaraman.

After keeping us waiting for some time, the action begins when a murder happens at the apartment, during a wedding ceremony. Jayaraman manages to find the killer and takes on him, but he flees from the spot. When the police arrive, Jayaraman becomes the prime suspect.

Now a cat and mouse game begins as Jayaraman desperately tries to prove his innocence by nabbing the killer.

There is a decent premise here, which has been packaged well by Priyadarshan. But at more than 150 minutes in its duration this one is really long and some genuine trimming could have done wonders. Also, there are too many loose ends in the plot, which is quite a downer here.

But it is the stellar performance from Mohanlal that adds to the merits of this thriller in a crucial way. The versatile genius makes the blind character look so believable with a matured performance that needs to be applauded.

Among the rest of the cast, it is Samuthirakani who needs a special mention for his good show. Nedumudi Venu, Anusree and Chemban Vinod Jose are also impressive.

Oppam is based on a script which is fine at best. But it is the slick presentation and of course, a brilliant performance from Mohanlal that overcomes its minor weaknesses. That could be a reason enough to buy a ticket for this one.

Oppam review- Verdict: Engaging watch
