Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Ozhivudivasathe Kali (An off-day game) portrays certain characters, who represents the attitude of the society where we live.
It’s not meant to be a tell-all tale that will spoon-feed the viewer with unending explanations and details. Instead it acts as a cynosure to the real feelings of a common man on aspects like caste, sex, wealth or social status.
Five friends decide to spend an off-day, which happens to be a day when a by-election is happening, at a lonely guest house with enough bottles of booze. They spend their day drinking and having fun together.
With fresh actors who all have performed very well, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan tries to make it all look natural. It’s like a camera has been left on right in the midst of a group of normal people, who are just like any of us, without them noticing it.
Their real nature come out when they see a woman there, who has come to cook food for them. But she smartly resists their advances. As they start drinking more, the facades give way for prejudices of more serious nature.
The film’s narrative has strong political tones and it has been handled in a subtle way. Even if you are not keen to find your own versions for the lines, this one is enjoyable mostly.
Still, at times the going gets labored, especially during the first half and then it becomes as if sequences are created just to take the things ahead.
Ozhivudivasathe Kali, based on a story by Unni R, is a nice attempt that leaves it to the viewers to make their own judgements. Though one gets the feeling that it is longer that its actual length of around 105 minutes, this one is a genuine experiment that needs to be applauded.
Ozhivudivasathe Kali review: Verdict- Good
