Vijay Sethupathi, Jayaprakash, Thulasi
Debutant director Arun Kumar?s Pannaiyarum Padminiyum is a feel good and charming emotional drama. It has a different approach as there is only one character a Premier Padmini car, which is the focus of the film, with the three other principal characters driving around it.
Arun had originally made it as a short film which he expanded to a full length feature film of 2 hours and 31 minutes. And that is exactly the film?s Achilles heels as it stretches and goes on and on, making it boring at times. The introductory establishment scenes of Pannaiyar and his family?s love for the car are long and tedious.
The story is single layered and revolves around a car. A village Pannaiyar or landlord (Jayaprakash) takes a liking for a Fiat Premier Padmini car that has been left in his care by a friend. Pannaiyar falls in love with the car and appoints Murugesan (Vijay Sethupathi) a tractor driver as his personal driver. Soon the car becomes an all-purpose vehicle for the villagers. But for Pannaiyar, his wife Chellamma (Thulasi) and Murugesan, the car is a like a family member. Due to unavoidable circumstances the car is taken away leaving them heartbroken.
The real lead pair in the film is Jayaprakash as Pannaiyar and his wife brilliantly played by Thulasi, with the driver Vijay Sethupathi playing second lead. Balasaravanan as Peedai was good. Like the proverbial curates egg it is good in parts, but too long. Unnecessary scenes like the driver?s clich?d romance with a local girl Malarvizhi (Iyshwarya), a few songs and comedy scenes have been inserted to make it a feature film.
The film?s plus point is its honesty and sincerity shown by Arun Kumar in making a different kind of film. Lovely melodious songs of Justin Prabhakar with the soothing Unakkaga Poranthene... being the pick of the lot.
Camera work of Gokul Benoy gives it the perfect hue, with lovely top angle revolving shots. Sreekar Prasad should have put his foot down and trimmed atleast 20 minutes of the film, to make it easy for the viewer.
On the whole PP is a nice film, but too laidback in its approach.
