Pathinettaam Padi review: An engaging ride

Shanker Ramakrishnan

Star Cast

Mammootty, Prithviraj (both cameos)

Director Shanker Ramakrishnan’s Pathinettaam Padi is the nostalgic journey of a man names Aswin Vasudev (Prithviraj), who owns the school of Joy, where teaching is not just about classrooms and textbooks.

It is Aswin who narrates his life until then, where his schooldays had a crucial role. The rivalry between the students of a Govt Model School and the nearby International school is what the story about.

The students from Model school are from modest backgrounds and they are mostly idealistic whereas for a section of the affluent students from the International school life is a big party. The students hate each other and they engage in brutal fights often.

The rivalry takes an ugly turn sometime later. Before things go completely out of hand, a young and quirky school teacher named Joy (Chandunath) tries to make a difference by handling the students in a different way.

There are some romantic tracks as well and perhaps the real focus is on the one is between Joy and a new teacher, Annie (Ahaana Krishna).

The story takes some unprecedented turns from then on and the second half shows how the lives of these students change with the coming of a dashing Stanford professor named John Abraham Palakkal (Mammootty).

With a nice plot, Shanker Ramakrishnan makes a confident entry as a director (he has earlier directed the film Island Express from the Kerala Café anthology). The visuals by Sudeep Elamon and the music by A H Kaashif are top notch.

There are a host of cameos which includes Mammootty, Prithviraj, Unni Mukundan, Arya and Priyamani, who are all presented well but the real heroes here are the young schoolboys who get into the shoes of their characters with amazing ease. They all are committed and could be seen in future projects for sure.

Pathinettaam Padi is a bit too long at a duration of 160 mins but is an engaging ride.
