Pattas review: Formulaic, action revenge drama!

Director

RS Durai Senthil Kumar

Star Cast

Dhanush, Sneha, Naveen Chandra, Mehreen Pirzadaa

After the pathbreaking Asuran and the underwhelming Enai Noki Paayum Thotta, Dhanush is back with Pattas, a mass  festival masala entertainer. Directed by RS Durai Senthil Kumar and produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, this is a breezy outing for Dhanush in a dual role of father and son. It is cakewalk for this experienced star actor who holds the film together with an arresting performance.

Pattas serves to raise awareness on Adimurai, a less heard of traditional martial art form of Tamil Nadu. There's a personal revenge angle too, in this predictable story. Sneha's character adds emotional weight to the film and it is one of her best roles in recent time with ample screen time and some martial arts scenes. Mehreen Pirzadaa's character is the cliched heroine who's there in few scenes leaving no impact.

Dhanush as Shakthi alias Pattas and his dad Draviya Perumal owns the film with the Adimurai and action scenes being the highlight.  Sneha is a biggest surprise packet and without any make-up she is brilliant as Kanyakumari, the lady on a mission.

Naveen Chandra as Nilan is the usual villain whose character goes through very predictable transformations and decisions. The young actor who plays Dhanush's friend and partner in crime provides a few funny moments with his unique slang and dialogue delivery. Munishkanth, Nassar and Mehreen Pirzadaa doesn't have much to do.

The songs tuned by Vivek - Mervin are hit numbers. Thanks to Dhanush's energetic dance moves, all the peppy numbers like  Chill Bro is foot tapping.

On the downside, the film has too many stereotypes- there are no twists and the climax scenes to project the revenge story as a sports film fails to impress. The first half that includes the comedy scenes and love track between Dhanush and Mehreen looks jaded. However, the runtime of around 140 minutes is eventually a saving grace! On the whole, Pattas is packaged as a commercial entertainer for Pongal family audiences. Go in with modest expectations and you may not be disappointed.
