Pongal Attractions

The final list of Pongal releases is out. The first of the block is Hari’s Kovil, released on 10th January. It is a love story set against village backdrop and has Silambarasan and Sonia Agarwal in the lead. It is Hari’s next release after last year’s blockbuster Saamy and hence a lot is expected from the film. The cast also has Nassar, Rajkiran and Vadivelu. Next to release is Dhanush’s Puthukottayilirundu Saravanan. Everyone in the trade is waiting to see if the boy wonder will churn out another hit after three successful films. This travelogue film opens in Puthukottai and moves over to Malaysia and Singapore telling the story of a youth in search of a job. The cast has a newcomer Aparna as the heroine and noted stuntman Peter Haynes as villain. S.S.Stanley directs the film and music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Read: Interview with Dhanush)

Kamalhassan’s Virumaandi releases on Pongal day. The highly hyped film has created a sensation from the time it was launched in April last year. The film titled Sandiyar earlier is now eagerly awaited for Kamalhassan’s performance and Ilayaraja’s melodious music. The cast also has Abhirami, Rohini, Nassar, Napoleon and Pasupathi. Vijaykanth’s Engal Anna is touted as the dark horse as ‘captain’ plays a chronic Bachelor in his early forties. This remake from Malayalam has a good story and director Siddique has a reputation of churning out nine hits in a row in Malayalam. Remember that when Vijaykanth played his age in Ramana the film was a hit and now with Engal Anna will he be able to repeat the success? The cast also has Prabhhu Deva, Namitha, Indraja and Swarnamalya. Music is by Deva. (Read: Preview of `Engal Anna)

Prashanth’s Jai is the only action packed film for this Pongal. It is a remake from the Telugu blockbuster Aadi. It tells the story of a young man’s determination to fight for the oppressed and downtrodden single-handedly. The highlight of this film is said to be the pairing of the real life father and son Thyagarajan and Prashanth for the first time. The heroine is newcomer Anshu Ambani and the cast also has Raj Kiran, Rajan.P.Dev and Bhanupriya. Music is by Mani Sharma. (Read: Preview of `Jai`
