Pretham review: Watchable

Director

Ranjit Shankar

Star Cast

Jayasurya, Aju Varghese, Govind Padmasoorya, Sharafuddeen

Director Ranjit Shankar’s Pretham is mainly set inside a resort, where three friends feel the presence of a ghost.

Denny (Aju Varghese), Shibu (Govind Padmasoorya) and Priyan (Sharafuddeen) have bought a stylish resort facing the sea. It’s their first venture together and they have set high goals in life. The film’s first half is all about the banters and the usual ‘bachelor escapades’, which are peppered with double meaning comments and twisted versions of hit dialogues from various Malayalam movies.

When Denny and Priyan tries to flirt with a beautiful girl named Suhanisa (Pearle Maaney), who is there to practice Zumba lessons from Shibu, they come across some strange experiences.

The trio starts witnessing some mysterious happenings from then on and are evidently scared. They approach a priest and he comes to the room to do some ‘exorcist prayers’. But when that doesn't help either, a mentalist named John Don Bosco (Jayasurya) makes his appearance.

As a trained mentalist John can read another person’s thoughts and he confirms the presence of a spirit there. And what he discovers are some startling truths.

In all fairness, the ghost here is not what you have seen in Malayalam until now. But if you are looking for a spooky thriller, there are no real scary moments in this one and it’s more of a comedy drama, with a rather meek climax.

Jayasurya, who sports a clean shaven head, is convincing as mentalist John Don Bosco. With his smart one liners Sharafuddeen scores more among the three, while Aju Varghese and Govind Padmasoorya are impressive enough. Dharmajan and Pearle Maaney have done their roles very well, among the rest of the cast.

With humourous lines and the attempts to create some eerie moments, Pretham is engaging for sure, though one gets the feeling that this could have been better. If all these fit your bill, give this one a try!

Pretham review- Verdict: Watchable
