Shaad Ali?s directorial debut, Saathiya, is a remake of Mani Ratnam`s successful south film Alaipayuthey starring Madhavan and Shalini. It`s a story of a young couple who realizes that life is not a bed of roses after they marry in a hurry.

Aditya (Vivek Oberoi) and Suhani (Rani Mukherji), a medical student, meet at a ?shaadi? where he falls head over heels for her. After that he keeps chasing her till she finally relents and gives in to his advances. Though her aim is to become a successful doctor and make her middle-class parents (Sharat Saxena & Tanuja) happy, she gets ready to marry Aditya when he proposes. But when Aditya?s rich family (mom Swaroop Sampat) mistreats Suhani?s parents, they decide that their daughter will not bear any humiliation and tell her to forget him.

But the lovers cannot stay apart and finally they get secretly married. And yet, they decide to live separately even after marriage, as they don?t want to hurt their families. But fate has other plans as one day their secret marriage is revealed to Suhani?s parents when she opens up to them and they throw her out of their home. Aditya too leaves his house and both of them move in together. They find a house (without any money) and stay on love and fresh air.

But slowly, pollution seeps into their pure relationship after they realize that love is not all bouquets. They start quarreling over petty issues till finally she decides to leave him and go back to her parents. He too is exasperated and wants it all to end. But when Suhani meets with a car accident, he changes his mind after seeing his beloved in hospital. Realizing that life is too short to fight, they get back together with renewed gusto and all?s well that ends well.

Saathiya is a simple story, which has been handled in a straightforward manner by the director. The good part is that he hasn?t deviated from the main plot all through the film. The bad part is that the script could have been tighter. Both Tabu and Shahrukh?s cameos have been wasted completely. Technically, it?s an ok movie, nothing like Mani Ratnam?s films (Ali is his assistant). Production values too are average as its mainly shot in buses and trains. The film?s music by Rahman is ordinary but two songs, ?Aye Udi Udi Udi? and ?Managalayam? remain fresh after the film is over. Anil Mehta?s cinematography is very good.

Performance wise, things get better as Vivek Oberoi proves once again that he has what it takes to last long and have a successful innings in movies. Rani Mukherjee too is effective in her role. The character cast including Tanuja, Sandhya Mridul and Swaroop Sampat are good. Overall, Saathiya is a sweet simple film with a clich?d story (rich boy-poor girl) and nice performances. It will appeal to Vivek Oberoi?s fans but otherwise will find the journey tough, as the road ahead is full of ?Kaante?s?!
