Movie Title

Salt Mango Tree

Rajesh Nair

Star Cast

Biju Menon, Lakshmi Chandramouli

The title of director Rajesh Nair’s Salt Mango Tree has been taken from that classic comedy scene from the yesteryear hit Doore Doore Oru Koodu Koottam, where Mohanlal calls it the English word for 'uppumaavu'.

Just like that rather silly connection, Rajesh Nair’s idea of movies also needs a serious rethink, considering this mess of a movie and his earlier two horrendous offerings, Annum Innum Ennum and Escape from Uganda.

Here, the whole story is about the preparations made by a middleclass couple to get admission for their son in an English medium school.

Aravindan (Biju Menon) runs a medical shop and his wife Priya (Lakshmi Chandramouli) is an accountant in some private firm. They are struggling hard to get their child into a prestigious school, where everything from the parents’ qualifications to their brand of cars will be scrutinized.

In all fairness, this plot that has been inspired from a Bengali movie titled Ramdhanu(2014) could be relevant in today’s world. But Rajesh Nair and Co. tests your patience with its amateurish presentation and after a while, you are not bothered if the kid gets the admission or not.

The scenes are never ending and there is an effort to evoke laughter out of most situations. But it all ends up in making you feel bored even more.

Biju Menon, who has been spectacular in most films with his likeable mannerisms and witty oneliners, look totally out of place. He just mimics some of his branded styles here and there. Lakshmi Chandramouli fails to impress and even good actors like Suhasini and Sudheer Karamana come up with halfhearted shows.

Salt Mango Tree is based on an interesting premise for sure, but ends up as a pathetic effort. Watch it only at your own risk!

Verdict: Avoidable.
