Shylock review: Mass masala entertainer

Director

Star Cast

Mammootty, Raj Kiran, Meena

For all the hardcore fans of Mammootty who get excited on seeing him in action, here is some kind of a gift from director Ajai Vasudev in the form of Shylock. That too, with slow motions and extreme close ups of the hero with punch dialogues, stunts, comedy and sentiments.

Movie producer Prathapa Varma (Kalabhavan Shajohn) has taken huge funds from a money lender named Boss (Mammootty), whose whereabouts are known to none. Boss makes his entry in a swanky Rolls Royce with his confidantes, a former producer Balakrishna Panicker (Baiju) and Ganapathi (Hareesh Kanaran) to the movie set, when Prathapa Varma refuses to pick his calls.

Now since you are not supposed to search for logic in a high voltage masala entertainer, just sit and watch Boss’s escapades without thinking much. As Boss goes on a rampage, even the corrupt Police Commissioner (Sidhique) and his cops can’t stop him.

Boss moves around like a true hero and can take on a battalion of armed men without much effort, and in case if you forget how big he is, there are constant reminders from his cronies.

And then, if you thought that Malayalam cinema has forgotten the “kounders from Theni”, here they are making their entry once again, post the intermission. This one is full of dialogues from yesteryear hits moulded with enough punch and also, boisterous music that could make you evidently uneasy.

The focus of the director here is to create drama and mass style. In all fairness, at just above 130 minutes this one could be an okay watch for the not so serious viewer.

Mammootty looks good and performs his part with total involvement. Sidhique and Kalabhavan Shajohn are impressive as the baddies. Raj Kiran and Meena have to play characters that we have seen many times before in movies, but they have performed in a dedicated way.

Shylock is tailor made for those who are looking for loud and colourful mass masala entertainers. For the die-hard fans of Mammootty, this one could be no less than a treat.
