Interacting with Sivakarthikeyan is always a pleasure as he is one actor who clearly knows what he is doing! But no one expected him to attempt an action thriller. “After Thani Oruvan, I wanted to do a film with Mohan Raja. When we were discussing several ideas, told Raja sir that he has proved himself in many genres like family drama, action thriller, and commercial entertainer so I'm fine with any of his style. It was Raja sir’s idea to do a film like Velaikkaran, an intense action thriller”, says Sivakarthikeyan.

In Mohan Raja’s Thani Oruvan, Arvind Swamy’s character overshadowed the protagonist so was there any inhibition when a versatile actor like Fahadh Faasil came on board? “I would be happy if people love Fahadh's character more than mine because, at the end of the day, it’s Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran. Both Arivu (Siva’s character) and Adhi (Fahadh) have equal footage in the film and it’s needless to say that, he scored better than me in many scenes but the fall and rise of our characters are beautifully written. Comparing to Siddharth Abhimanyu, people can relate more with Adhi”, says Sivakarthikeyan.

Siva says that he generally doesn’t go to other people’s house and not many invite him too. “Fahadh and I’ve become good friends now. Recently after our press meet in Kochi I visited Fahadh’s house and had a sumptuous dinner. Also as an actor, he has influenced me because our views are contrasted. I’ve come to know why actors like Fahadh love to do certain kind of films, it has become a good learning experience and it helps me to enjoy those films”, he says.

However, Siva says he will never ever attempt dark films with a sad ending. “Recently someone suggested me to watch Million Dollar Baby. The film started well and I thought it will be an inspirational concept like Chak De India and Ethir Neechal but the sad ending made me not do anything throughout the day. I also recently saw Arjun Reddy on Amazon Prime, the opening scene with the hero holding knife in his hands itself told me that I can’t do such films. I loved Aruvi because it had a positive ending, I never told this to anyone, the director is my cousin”, says Sivakarthikeyan.

But Siva is not against non-commercial films. “I’m a big fan of quality films. When people told me about a Kannada film ‘Kirik Party’, which is on par with Premam, I readily watched it here in Chennai”, he says.

Sivakarthikeyan also says that theme of Velaikkaran will be loved by the women audiences and they can teach a relevant information to their kids. The runtime of Velaikkaran is close to 160 minutes but Siva says people don’t really have any aversion for a long duration as long as directors keep them entertained. “Big blockbusters like Baahubali 2, Mersal, Thani Oruvan and Arjun Reddy are the recent examples”, he smiles.

The actor spoke high about Nayanthara and heaped praise on the actress for her dedication. There is a constant blame on Sivakarthikeyan that he is only doing films with RD Raja but for the first time, the actor exclusively confirms to that he is doing a film for Studio Green.

“Though I’m yet to hear the script, Vignesh ShivN will most probably direct the film. Yes, my collaboration with 24 AM Studios will have a break but we will continue working on many films. I also have a commercial sci-fi film with Ravikumar, a never attempted genre in Tamil cinema. You can expect a lot of surprises next year ”, reveals Sivakarthikeyan.

Another trend which has become a routine in Siva’s films is he choose Anirudh for urban-centric films and Imman for rural films. “No... No, It was not a conscious decision (laughs). In fact, I’ve plans to rope in Anirudh for a grammathu film set in Madurai and Imman anna for a city-based subject. I always leave it to the directors, they are the ones who choose technicians. For Velaikkaran, Raja sir felt Anirudh will be the best choice”, he says.

Right from his college days, Sivakarthikeyan had interest in movies and mime plays. “My good friend Arun Raja Kamaraj and I directed a mime in which a youngster commits a crime, becomes a gangster and ends up as a politician. Sounds familiar? It was a similar concept like Pudhupettai and only seven months later Selva sir’s film released. Though our execution was not up to the mark, it gave us a lot of confidence. Now Arun Raja Kamaraj is getting ready to direct his debut film, which is an interesting script on the struggles of women cricketers in the country. I’m eagerly looking forward”, exclaims Siva.

On his next film with Ponram, Siva says “We have completed nearly 50% of the film. Since our previous two films—Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam and Rajini Murugan are big hits, there is a huge expectation on the third outing but we are working hard because only then, the combo can be repeated for the fourth time”, signs off Sivakarthikeyan, who will resume shooting for the yet-untitled film from January.
