Soorarai Pottru- A solid and satisfying watch

Sudha Kongara

Star Cast

Suriya, Aparna Balamurali, Urvashi, Kaali Venkat, Paresh Rawal, Mohan Babu

Soorarai Pottru is one of the best films of Suriya in this decade. The actor of his stature had a few misses here and there although he had given his best in each film. There is an analogy in Soorarai Pottru about how a sparrow eats a little for its flying range. Suriya is an eagle among actors but with weak scripts in the recent past, he was unable to fly high in the last few years. Thanks to Sudha Kongara, who has finally served a sumptuous meal to his fans.

As we all know was that Soorarai Pottru is loosely based on Captain Gopinath's book Simply Fly, the dream of a farmer's son to venture into the aviation business to provide affordable airline travel to people from different walks of life, especially to the farmers and working class.

In a country, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, this incredible dream of a farmer's son from a small town is not easy. With crooked politicians, corrupt officials, and cunning businessmen around, NeduMaaran Rajangam aka Maara (Suriya) want to see that his dream comes true. With the help of his friends, villagers, and a supportive wife Bommi(Aparna Balamurali) can Maara do it?

Suriya is the biggest plus of this film and the way he laughs, cries, gets frustrated, fight, and rise in the film is a treat to watch. Heaping praise on his physical transformations has become a cliche so let's not talk about it.

Aparna Balamurali is another surprise packet as she has a meaty role with ample screen space. She is a welcome change from well-known faces and the actress looks fresh. In a film that talks about aviation, politics, and business, no one will expect a cute touching love story but Sudha has beautifully placed the underlying meaningful romance without disturbing the core plot of the film.

On the downside, Paresh Rawal is the usual cliched businessman villain and his performance is quite average. Among the rest of the cast and crew, Urvashi is brilliant although she only comes in only few scenes. The particular scene where she breaks down in front of her son and recite the letter her husband wrote over the years is a gem. Mohan Babu, Kaali Venkat, and Karunas are the other notable performers of the film.

Technically, GV Prakash has delivered outstanding songs and background score. Cinematography by Niketh Bommireddy is also equally good, he authentically captured the various periods.

Overall, Soorarai Pottru stands out with its fine writing and outstanding performance of Suriya.  It is undeniably another good film from Sudha Kongara. On the whole a solid and satisfying watch.

Verdict: Good
