Teddy review: An average fantasy thriller

Star Cast

Arya, Sayyeshaa, Sathish, Karunakaran, Magizh Thirumeni

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan has once again made an average fantasy thriller with his new film Teddy. The filmmaker has borrowed the Teddy angle from the 2012 Hollywood fantasy comedy Ted but Teddy is not a comedy film, it has a tried and tested organ trafficking angle which we have watched in umpteen Tamil films including Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal.

Sri (Sayyeshaa) goes missing after she was sent in an ambulance for first aid. But the corrupt healthcare workers and doctors inject a medicine that puts her into Coma. But her soul gets into a cute Teddy Bear. Now, the teddy can walk and speak. It escapes from the hospital and roams across Chennai to find a safe place.

On seeing the ferocious side of Shiva (Arya), a genius lonely youngster who has a photographic memory and immense knowledge in various fields, the teddy goes to his place and explains the injustice that happened to Sri. Though Shiva didn't initially buy the story, he later believes it and starts his new adventure to find out the criminal behind the heinous crime.

The first half of the film is largely thanks to the cute act of Teddy and the interesting characterization of Arya. But the post-intermission, Shakti Rajan took audiences for granted with several logical loopholes that one can enjoy the proceedings only if you keep your brains at home (it's an OTT film so, you shouldn't be having one to enjoy the second half). But the climax is poetic, thanks to the Arya and Sayyeshaa pair and the lovely moments created in the first half.

Arya looks razor-sharp in the film, he looks confident and performs the stunts with great elan. His characterization is also unique and interesting. Sayyeshaa only appears in the first and last ten minutes of the film, she looks gorgeous in those brief portions. Magizh Thirumeni comes as a caricature although his intro dialogue was powerful. Sathish and Karunakaran are just okay in the comic portions.

Technically, Imman's songs and background score enhance the quality of the film, and Yuva's cinematography is just average.

Overall, Teddy is a strictly average film and it's watchable only for the fun first half!

Verdict: Average fantasy thriller
