Narain, Poonam Bajwa, Santhanam, Rajendran
Exactly three years after Mysskin?s classic Anjathey, the Tamil audiences are seeing Narain in his latest Thambikottai. The Ammu Ramesh directed film is a formulaic mass masala which every star worth his salt in Kollywood loves to do for the sake of his ?fans?!
From a class hero Narain wants to be accepted as a mass hero and in the process falls between two stools. The story and presentation is a Xerox of so many other earlier movies. It has everything which one can associate with a larger-than-life mass hero film. Familiar punchlines like the villain during a fight scene pleading with the hero not to beat him to pulp as he has a status in society. The hero shouts back- ?Status Mukhyam Alla, Stamina Thaan? !
If you still want to know the story, here it is- Alagiri (Narain) is a student in a college where his sister (Meena) is a lecturer! Meena brought him up after the death of their parents (told in a flashback with Prabhu coming as dad and Kausalya as mother). A lot of Akka-Thambi ?Pasam? and our hero along with his friends (Santhanam, MS Bhaskar) go on NSS trip to clean up a village Thambikottai. Enter villain Amritalingam (Naan Kadavul Rajendran) who rules the place with an iron hand.
His daughter Kanaka (Poonam Bajwa) falls in love with our hero leading to complications. Well the hero has also an old issue to settle as the villain was responsible for the death of his parents. The bad guys are also supported by a big bad foul mouthed lady Pandi Amma (Sangeeta) who quotes from law books. Rest of this predictable film is how the hero not only avenges the death of his parents and saves the villagers from the tyranny of the villain and fulfils their dreams.
We will not say anything about Narain?s performance but has a word of advice for him-?Please, the mass hero is not your cup of tea?. Sangeetha overacts, hams and shouts at the top of her voice. The plus point of the film is Santhanam, as a comedian, he simply rocks. Nothing much can be said of D Imman?s music. On the whole, to use a favourite Tamil cinema trade jargon- ?Thambikottai is strictly a B & C Padam?
Verdict- Run-of-the-mill masala
Time pass comedy entertainer
Average comedy entertainer
Decent rural family entertainer
Soubin Shahir and Mamta Mohandas shine in this conventional film
