Tharangam review: It's a disappointment, no question about it

Dominic Arun

Star Cast

Tovino Thomas, Balu Varghese, Santhy Balachandran, Neha Iyer

With a rather overlong introductory sequence, it’s known pretty early in Tharangam: the curious case of Kallan Pavithran that things are going to be wacky.

And as you watch the humorous scenes involving the God Almighty himself, death, life, afterlife and so on, all you feel is a bit confused.

Spyder (tollywood) review: The film has some riveting moments | Spyder (kollywood) review: Mahesh Babu reminds us of Vijay in many scenes

Then it all shifts to certain other characters, mainly two cops Pappan (Tovino Thomas) and Joy (Balu Varghese). They are dumb and their stupidity leads to a major goof up during an encounter with some dreaded criminals.

Certain other characters appear soon after, like Pappan’s girlfriend Malu (Santhy Balachandran) with whom he is having a live-in relationship and Omana (Neha Iyer), who’s running a catering business. There are a few others who come in between, amidst confusions, comedy, action and so on added in heavy doses.

Ramaleela review: A gripping thriller worth a watch | American Made review: Visually rustic and mildly thrilling

Now, if you are hardcore fans of filmmakers like Guy Ritchie or Quentin Tarantino, you will feel like this one is attempted to be on those lines. But all that the makers manages to achieve here in that effort, is a mishmash of some experiments, which unfortunately is in a bad taste.

In all fairness, there are some enjoyable moments here and there but the director seems to have gone a bit overboard with this one. The duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes feel like a never ending one, as you try to find sense in the quirky sequences. The visuals and the music are good.

Mahanubhavudu review: Sharwanand steals the show in the title role | Judwaa 2 review: Varun shines in an unimaginative rehash | Karuppan review: A formulaic rural entertainer

Tovino Thomas has performed his character with total honesty and he is indeed impressive. Balu Varghese lights up some of the scenes with his smart quips. Santhy Balachandran, Neha Iyer and the rest of cast have done their parts well, but they can’t do much in the absence of good writing or competent direction.

is attempted as a dark comedy but has minimal success in the process. It’s a disappointment, no question about it, from a team capable of so much more.

Tharangam review: Verdict: A failed experiment
