The Great Indian Kitchen review - An excellent family drama

Director

Jeo Baby

Star Cast

Nimisha Sajayan, Suraj Venjarammoodu

Director Jeo Baby’s The Great Indian Kitchen is the first Malayalam release of the year and comes on a new streaming platform, Nee Stream. And what a way to start the year, with this cute little film that makes some strong statements!

The names of most of the characters in this movie are never mentioned, which is quite smart as the settings are so familiar and relatable to each one of us. We feel like we know most of the characters ourselves, or perhaps, some of them have our own traits as well.

The story begins with Suraj Venjarammoodu, a school teacher, meeting Nimisha Sajayan at her house as part of their matchmaking. They get married soon and a happy and excited Nimisha reaches Suraj’s house, where he is living with his parents.

There are no big dramatic situations that ensue but the hypocrisy in the patriarchal system conveniently followed by the society generally is beautifully shown here, through details that anyone would come across in their own homes.

Everything looks fine from the outside, but the emotional turmoil that the womenfolk goes through is just ignored. They are expected to find happiness in making the men in the house happy and live according to the likes and dislikes of the men there.

With a well-written script, Jeo Baby narrates the story in an engaging manner. The visuals, the music, and the editing are perfectly in tune with the mood. The delicious frames move slowly and repeatedly showing vegetables being cut, food cooked, served hot n the table, cleaning the vessels and table that we become a part of the daily mundane routine.

The performances of the actors, which include quite a few fresh faces, could be among the highlights of this movie. Among the lead actors, Suraj Venjarammoodu is subtle, while Nimisha Sajayan steals the show with a stellar performance. She gets into the shoes of her character in an amazing way.

There are certain subplots in The Great Indian Kitchen that stands out from the rest of the movie. Having said that, this is an absolutely genuine effort and would perhaps have an effect on your thinking process as well. Don’t miss this one.

Verdict: Excellent
