Comedy tracks in Tamil movies have their unique flavour. Over the top and bordering on the absurd, they rely more on timing and tone than content to create humour. One could argue that the subjects for comedy in most Tamil films are not very sophisticated; often, they are quite offensive. Much of the humour is culture-centric, born out of a brand of irony for which only our beloved Madras bashai has a lexicon. It’s hard to explain to people from other cultures as to just why Vadivel saying ‘Vada pochey!’ is so hilarious. Or the eternal vaazhapazham joke from Karagaatakaran. The situations themselves needn’t be realistic or original, it’s more to do with the comedian’s personality than the lines that the person spouts. Funny is as funny does.
But breaking this mould as a welcome relief are the female comedians of Kollywood who however, are few and far in between.
