The Priest review: An engaging thriller

Jofin T Chacko

Star Cast

Mammootty, Manju Warrier,Saniya Iyyappan, Nikhila Vimal

Debutant director Jofin T Chacko’s The Priest is an investigation drama, where the ‘detective’ is a Christian priest.

The story begins when a young girl named Diya (Saniya Iyyappan) approaches the priest Fr. Carmen Benedict (Mammootty) to investigate about the incidents where suicides are happening one after the other in a wealthy household.

Incidentally, Fr. Benedict is known to have helped the cops in unsolving the mysteries behind several crimes in the past.

Even as the cops and Fr. Benedict investigate the case, another suicide happens, quite unexpectedly. This comes as a shock for the team but they manage to get some clues.

The investigation leads to another episode and the priest follows a school kid named Ameya (Baby Monica), who lives in an orphanage. She is more of a recluse, who at times behaves quite strangely. The new teacher, played by Nikhila Vimal, however, manages to strike a good relation with her, and that makes her more pleasant and friendly.

Let’s not discuss more details and play spoilsports, as this one is a suspense drama.

With a fine script, the director packs some surprises, twists, and of course scary moments to keep the going interesting. The visuals and the music helps in enhancing the feel.

Among the performances, Nikhila Vimal and Saniya Iyyappan are good. Manju Warrier impresses as always, though she has a limited screen space. The surprise here is the confident performance by the young actress, Baby Monica.

But then, it is the stellar show from the acting genius Mammootty that makes this one really special. The hero is absolutely convincing and does his part in spectacular style.

The Priest may not be perfect but manages to keep the viewers glued on to the screen for sure. Try this one!

Verdict: An engaging thriller
