Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru review: A riveting cop thriller
Karthi, Rakul, Bose Venkat, Rohith Pathak
Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru is a good example of an entertaining commercial film that is neither lazy or senseless. Don’t miss it, as it is easily one of the better films this year. Movies based on real-life incidents always make us root for the characters and here's an inspiring story of a cop who turns into a hero when faced with extraordinary circumstances.
After his striking debut with the con-heist thriller Sathuranga Vettai (loosely based on real-life incidents), Vinoth has chosen the famous ‘Operation Bawaria’ spearheaded by the then Inspector-General of Police (North Zone) S. R. Jangid and his team, as they arrested dacoits from North India for executing crimes and robberies in Tamil Nadu. Vinoth takes us back to that time in history, where we see it through the eyes of a young police officer.Theeran Thirumaran (Karthi) is an upright police officer, who uses his brain and brawn in equal proportions. The film begins with cops scraping unnecessary documents and loading important case files to the system. A young police officer’s eyes lighten up in shock and surprise when he reads an old (1995-2005) robbery case file and he immediately calls the head of the operation, Theeran and seeks an appointment to meet him.
As soon as the young police officer asks about the case, Theeran walks down the memory lane, he recalls his early training days and how a series of robbery cum murder crime executed by a bunch of criminals changed his life upside down. This real-life story turns slowly but smarty into a one-man mission by Theeran to pin down the hard-core criminals.
Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru is easily one of the superbly researched and stylishly shot cop thriller in Tamil cinema, kudos to director Vinoth as he has not only registered the facts but also packaged it in a commercial format to engage the audiences. Except for the romantic portions which is annoying after a while, it is an exemplary work from the young director.
We have seen the sarcastic one-liners of Vinoth in Sathuranga Vettai, and here too he has written similar funny moments mocking the system and lethargic cops without moving out of the screenplay flow. Kudos to the director for his research work and shooting the second half of the film in a terrain completely new to Tamil cinema.
Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru has authentically showcased the modus-operandi of the cops, how an investigation would progress, practical challenges in arresting criminals and their personal sacrifices for their profession without cinematic glorification or melodrama. Especially, the pre-interval stretch is easily the best sequence in the film as the director brings his audience to the edge of the seat.
Theeran is one film Karthi can be proud of in his career, as he has invested both physical strength and emotional courage, and gives us a hero that’s hard not to root for. The film expectedly, rests on his shoulders, and he underplays his character beautifully, delivering the stray note of humor almost conversationally. The actor has given his life for the character, we can clearly see the physical challenges he would’ve undergone for the film, mainly in the action sequences in extremely hot locations. We honestly hope that a fine actor like him doesn’t get trapped in mass formulaic films in future.
Rakul as Priya is the namesake heroine in the film, though her character has enough screen space in a cop thriller like this. She looks pretty and her chemistry with Karthi is good. Among the supporting cast, Bose Venkat has a full length role and he completely justifies it with a neat performance.Villains Abhimanyu Singh, Rohith Pathak and Surendar Thakur brings a creepy, menacing presence to their characters. On the downside, the film is a bit lengthy at 2 hours 37 minutes.
Ghibran’s background score is a huge strength for the film, his songs have been only used as montages but his rerecording elevates the chasing sequence to a different level. Sathyan Sooryan’s visuals is another striking aspect, the pre-interval chase in the pitch dark and rain effect is laudable, the second half portions shot in the desert also deserve a special mention. Stunt choreographer Dilip Subbarayan’s action sequences are real, gritty and believable.
Overall, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru turns an important story into a compelling film. Don’t miss it!

Tamil audiences who love international detective series and films should watch #TheeranAdhigaaramOndru. Finally, we've got a sensible cop action thriller (of course with our own commercial ingredients in limited proportions). Brilliant effort by Vinoth, @Karthi_Offl & team.

#TheeranAdhigaaramOndru 1st half: Rivetingly staged. One of the best interval blocks of the year. Extensive research has gone into the film and it's quite evident in the storytelling. Realistic, authentic portrayal of police procedures.

#TheeranAdhigaaramOndru: A riveting, explosive action drama that's a solid, much needed addition to Tamil cinema's list of cop films. Easily one of @Karthi_Offl's best works. Terrific, terrific work by @GhibranOfficial
It has been a while since we had such a relentless action film that didn't flinch at showing violence and it's aftermath on screen. And we also get a sweet romantic track that acts as a relief against all this grimness. Liking #TheeranAdhigaaramOndru a lot.
Raw rustic cop story, director research is spot on.
Decent film Actor Karthi done his part & screenplay deserves.
Heroine love portions didn't click waste of time .
6 f****** songs sucks.
Overall decent film with few lapse
It is not always that a sequel lives up to the huge expectations of the highly successful original. Drishyam 2 does that in a brilliant way. Go for this one!
‘Naandhi’ is all about Allari Naresh’s intense performance
The backstory lacks emotional connect and the only solace is the constant cat and mouse game between cops and the robbers in Chakra
The film harks back to the way Bollywood doesn't make love stories anymore
