Murugan (Vijay Sethupathy ) a shepherd lives in a village in Theni , whose dominating widowed mother Veerayi (Saranya) lives for him. Murugan spends most of his time boozing around with his friends, till accidentally he meets Pechi (Vasundhra), who comes from a family of thieves. He falls for her, which irks his mother and her relatives who are baying for his blood. Due to circumstances they are forced to elope which leads to the final twist in the story.
The highlight of the film is riveting performance of Saranya as the anguished mother who cannot stand her son marrying into a family of thieves but at the same time can?t let go of her beloved son. Saranya?s Theni Tamil and the emotion she shows through her eyes in the climax is guaranteed to win her an award. New faces Sethupathy and Vasundhra are adequate for their roles along with Theepetti Ganesan?s comedy scenes.
Vairamuthu?s lyrics tuned by debutant NR Rahnathan are meaningful and melodious. It reminds you so much of the Vairamuthu- Ilayaraja combination of the 80?s. The film is a brave attempt in mirroring rural life in Tamil Nadu, without making too many commercial compromises.
