Thoppil Joppan review- Lazy effort

Johny Antony

Star Cast

Mammootty, Mamta Mohandas

If you have been keeping a track of Mammootty’s recent films, the greatest crisis for most of his characters is to find a suitable bride. In Johny Antony’s Thoppil Joppan also, it’s the same story.

Thoppil Joppan (Mammootty) had suffered a heartbreak as a youth, when he got separated from his sweetheart Annie (Andreah Jeremiah) as he didn't have enough money. He leaves home to become rich. She promised him to wait but by the time he came back with a bagful of cash, she was engaged to another man.

From then on he has been searching for another girl and since it is not really easy to find a girl who matches his first love, Joppan and his gang of silly friends devote their time drinking and playing kabaddi.

The kabaddi sequences give way for some action as the hero teaches the local sub inspector a lesson. Sometime later, he meets Maria (Mamta Mohandas), a doctor who has a horrible sense when it comes to picking men in her life. Later, the story shifts to a de-addiction centre.

With a rather incompetent script that stitches a few episodes together, not to forget the buffoonery that comes even at the most inappropriate times, this one tests the patience of the viewer in a big way. How can you justify trying to make fun of even a handicapped person and call it comedy?

It’s quite surprising to see such a brilliant actor like Mammootty choosing characters like these, which are badly written and not suiting his age or style in any way. All Mamta has to do is to repeat some of her trademark style and sing praises about the hero.

Andrea is wasted in a role where she has nothing much to do other than wear cotton sarees and keep a serious face. Spare a thought for the actors who have to play sidekicks to the hero, especially such good actors like Alencier Ley for instance, who keeps blabbering stupidity in the name of humour.

Thoppil Joppan is a lazy effort made with scant regard for the viewer who are there spending their time and money. Watch it at your risk only!

Verdict: Lowbrow comedy
