Thrissur Pooram review: A loud, festival entertainer!

Rajesh Mohanan

Star Cast

Jayasurya, Swati Reddy

Director Rajesh Mohanan’s Thrissur Pooram is about a goonda leader named ‘Pullu Giri’.

The title sequence shows how Giri (Jayasurya) became a ‘quotation’ gang leader. After a shocking incident to which he was witness to as a very young boy, Giri emerges as a local don in Thrissur. He has a gang who are ready to kill anyone and are ready to die for him.

Giri also is loyal to his gang and would do anything if someone dares to hurt any of them. A veteran lawyer played by Mallika Sukumaran, who considers him as her foster son, ensures he is out of danger when it comes to legal hassles.

When the story begins, Giri has given up criminal activities following his marriage. The couple has a daughter now and the reformed don is running a mineral water plant with his gang members.

As you would have guessed by now, some incidents trigger the return of the hero into action mood once again. Once he decides to do so, get ready for heavy duty action sequences and some tricks, like one “KSRTC episode” that is unintentionally funny.

In all fairness, it is the dedicated performance of Jayasurya and the delicious frames by R D Rajasekhar that keeps the viewer entertained here. The music by Ratheesh Vega, who incidentally has written the script, is too loud mostly. At 2 hours 36 minutes, this one is a tad too long.

Jayasurya is convincing as the local gangster, who is soft-spoken mostly but won’t spare anyone who dares to rub him the wrong way. Swathi Reddy is good as his wife. Manikkuttan, Sudev Nair and Indrans are also impressive.

Thrissur Pooram is tailor made for those who are looking for masala action flicks, with violence and loud music. For the fans of Jayasurya, the hero is in fine form.
