Director Khalid Rahman, who made the well appreciated Anuraga Karikkinvellam earlier, is back with a realistic drama with strong political statements in Unda.

A group of policemen from Kerala Police are deployed to Chhattisgarh for election duty, in a forest region where there is heavy Maoist threat. They divide into some groups then. A nine member team led by sub inspector Manikandan (Mammootty) is posted in a lonely area where a ITBP commando Kapil Dev (Bhagwan Tiwary) is also present. The policemen, who barely have any weapon to combat the Maoist attack, at first does not realize the seriousness of the situation that they are in. When they slowly understands what kind of danger they canface, panic strikes them.

They don’t have enough bullets and the facilities are really limited. As the policemen start showing their frustration, Manikandan has no clues about how to pacify them. The authorities who sent them has no concern about their well-being or safety there and the cops live in fear.It is pretty clear from the beginning that this one has not much action and the effort is to show things in a realistic way. Harshad, who has written the screenplay, and director Khalid Rahman presents a politicaldrama in an engaging manner. Bold political statements are made and questions are asked, which will hit you hard. Of course, this one is for those who are aware about topical issues and those looking for masala may not find it that interesting.

Sajith Purushan’s visuals and Prashanth Pillai’s music are really good. There have been comparisons made to the 2017 Hindi movie Newton before the release, but it is clear that the similarities end with some aspects of the story backdrop. With an impressive lineup of actors, the going becomes engaging mostly. There are some loose ends but we won’t be spoilsport discussing it all. Bollywood actor Bhagwan Tiwary shines as a doctor turned soldier.

But then, it is Mammootty who unleashes a brilliant display of subtle acting. He is not really healthy, not much confident and is scared, as he gets into the shoes of the character of Mani sir. He needs to be applauded for his dedicated performance. Unda is a compelling ride that will appeal mainly to those who take movies seriously. If you are a fan of Mammootty, here is one of his finest performances. Watch this one!
