Veteran filmmaker J Mahendran (79) who made classic films like ‘Mullum Malarum’, ‘Uthiri Pookal’, ‘Nenjathe Killathe’, ‘Johnny’, and ‘Metti’ passed away in Chennai. He was hospitalized due to kidney malfunction and age-related ailments but unfortunately, the director breathed his last today morning.
Mahendran was invited by the late Chief Minister MGR to pen the screenplay of his dream film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ but due to various reasons, the film got shelved. Later, Mahendran also collaborated with MGR in another dropped film Vazhve Vaa and worked as an assistant director in the Makkal Thilagam’s Kaanchi Thalaivan.
Debuted as an official screenwriter with Nam Moovar, Mahendran also penned the script for Sivaji Ganesan’s Nirai Kudam. Mahendran’s first film as a director was Rajinikanth’s Mullum Malarum which fetched positive reviews for both the filmmaker and the actor.
Though Rajinikanth was introduced by K Balachander, the actor still says that Mahendran is his most favorite filmmaker. Mahendran’s Nenjathe Killathe starring Mohan, Suhasini, Prathap Pothan, and Sarath Babu won three National Awards.
Recently, Mahendran also acted in a few films including Vijay’s Theri, Rajinikanth’s Petta, and Vijay Sethupathi Seethakaathi. Mahendran also headed the direction department in BOFTA Film Institute, Chennai.
