Vettah review: Watchable

Rajesh Pillai

Star Cast

Kunchacko Boban, Manju Warrier, Indrajith

Director Rajesh Pillai’s Vettah is a mind game involving two cops and a wily guy, accused of kidnapping a top heroine. But as it happens in thrillers of this genre, things get intriguing with each passing moment.

Sreebala IPS (Manju Warrier) is a firebrand police officer, who is investigating the kidnapping of an actor named Uma Satyamoorthi (Sanusha) and an NRI businessman named Emil (Midhun Ramesh).  ACP Xylex Abraham (Indrajith) is assisting Sreebala in this case.

A mobile that is found inside the car leads the cops to Melvin Philip (Kunchacko Boban), who turns out to be a lot more smarter than they had imagined. He refuses to reveal more details and the cops have no clues as to what to investigate next.

Then there is a parallel story involving Sreebala’s father, a former police officer, who is now seriously handicapped after a fatal accident.

The first half gives some clues but not much about what is in store and the mystery is unveiled in the second half. Of course, there are too many loose ends that will leave several questions unanswered, in the minds of the viewer.

But what works in the film’s favour are mainly, the reasonably brisk pace and then, the less than two-hour duration.

Rajesh Pillai, who became a trendsetter of sorts in Malayalam by experimenting with a refreshingly new pattern unlike the conventional norms with Traffic, manages to package the film as an engaging one.

The performances of the film’s lead cast are impressive. Kunchacko Boban adds a subtle charm to his soft-spoken character. Manju Warrier is good as the lady cop and Indrajith displays his acting bones in a fine manner.

Vettah may be far from perfect, but it is indeed a decent entertainer especially for the not so discerning viewers. There are some fine moments and a few genuine thoughts, which could be appealing to you.
