Vijayakanth celebrates 40 years in cinema
Recently, actor/politician Vijayakanth celebrated his four-decade journey in cinema and he is the only actor to have done over 150 films in Tamil. He has never thought of moving to other industries, though his movies have been dubbed into other languages.

At the 40th year anniversary celebrations many bigwigs of the film industry were present to wish and support him. Vijayakanth made his debut in Inikkum Ilamai (1979), in which he played the antagonist. Though Inikkum Ilamai and the films that followed were box-office duds it was Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam (1980) which was selected for the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India.

With SA Chandrasekhar's Sattam Oru Iruttarai, he proved that he is a force to reckon with. In 1984, he had 18 releases and with this, he became the only Tamil actor to release so many films in a year. Director SA Chandrasekhar recalled how the DMDK President had helped his son. “My son Vijay wanted to become an actor and I made his first film ‘Naalaya Theerpu’, which was a failure. I thought if Vijayakanth and Vijay act together in a film, it would be a big boost for the latter. When I called Vijayakanth and told him that I would be at his home in five minutes, he came to my house in just two minutes. When I opened about on the remuneration part, Vijayakanth asked me to start the shoot and said that other things can be discussed later. Sendhooraapandi was a hit, what Vijayakanth did to Vijay was really a huge help”, said SA Chandrasekhar who made seventeen films with Vijaykanth.

During the 90s, Vijayakanth made a conscious decision to include patriotism in his films and that was the best decision which paved the way to entering politics. His AR Murugadoss directed Ramanaa had won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film in 2002.

Later addressing his fans, Vijayakanth said: “Everyone should carefully go back to their homes and I thank everyone who came here for me. I’m ready to solve all the issues and help the film industry”.
