Vijay Sethupathi's last solo hit in Tamil cinema is was 96. He became the darling of Tamil audiences for his natural style of acting and choice of quirky films. Everyone loved and adored him for roles in Pizza, Soodhu Kaavum, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, Sethupathi and Vikram Veda among others.
But soon, his movies stopped making sense and crashed at the box office. Distributors, producers and audiences are quite upset with the actor's choice of films as he agrees to do films even if it is a small role or bad scripts. Sometimes, Sethupathi also signs films respecting his bond with the producers and friends. But the actor completely forgets the point that he has become a star only because of his acting prowess and choice of scripts.
While Super Deluxe received critical acclaim, the rest of the films including Junga, Seethakathi, Sindhubaadh, and Sanga Thamizhan were huge disasters at the box office. The actor also agrees to do a lot of multi-starrers in which he appears in half-baked characters.
In Petta, Marconi Mathai (Malayalam) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (Telugu), a mass hero like Sethupathi was portrayed as a character artist which further reduced his image. And the sad thing is that there is nothing to cheer abut his upcoming films. Some of the actor's solo films in the pipeline are Ka Pae Ranasingam (extended cameo), Laabam with SP Jananathan, Maamanithan with Seenu Ramasamy, and Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir. We hope these films give him the much-needed break!
In Thalapathy 64 he is playing an important role but even if the film turns out to be a hit, the credit will go to Vijay.
