Out of all the people you have met in your life, you might classify some as close friends, others as just friends or acquaintances.
If America had to classify India in such a fashion, then we would barely qualify as an acquaintance.
A look at some of the things due to which it is evident that India and America aren’t friends of any kind…
Not big trade partners: US places great emphasis on trade and India is not even part of their Top 10 trading partners.
That’s why they are not really bothered about us. Figures vary from year to year, but we are usually just one-tenth when compared to a country like China.
The US is a huge arms exporter and India is a huge arms importer. The Americans have always been irked that we got our arms from the USSR and now also we seek European markets.
Just the IT market and outsourcing market is not enough and even that has a negative sentiment because it leads to job losses in the US.
Not strategic partners: Here forget the world stage, we are nowhere on the radar even when it comes to the Asia theatre. Israel, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Taiwan, South Korea…
That’s just naming 10 odd countries in our continent itself that America cares more about, spends more time over and that feature prominently on its strategic list.
In fact when the US unofficially asked India to be its ally, we refused and that irked them no end.
Barack Obama: All US Presidents never gave a damn about India but George W Bush was one of the first who at least attempted to rectify that. He thought of making India an official ally and pushed the Nuclear Deal strongly.
Many Indian foreign policy experts thought this as a new beginning and opined that Obama would take this forward.
However, Obama decided to make many steps backwards and doesn’t give India a second thought about anything.
Millions of Indians simply love Obama but the US President for one has absolutely no love for India. It is but natural that his entire administration should be a reflection of that.
