New Delhi: New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, a free ration scheme, for 80 crore people across the country till end of November.
In a televised address to the nation, Modi also said the government was working on a "one nation, one ration card" initiative.
On the extension of the PMGKAY, he said it will cost the government Rs 90,000 crore more.
Under the scheme, five kgs of wheat or rice and one kg of pulses per month will be given free of cost to the poor. The scheme was initially rolled out for three months.
The prime minister also said timely lockdown to contain coronavirus and other decisions saved many lives, but added that since "Unlock 1" has begun, people have shown negligence.
He said in comparison to other countries across the globe, India has done well in dealing with the pandemic.
"We have reached Unlock 2 phase. We have already reached the season where you witness a lot of cold and cough. I urge you to take care of yourself," said PM Modi.
"Ever since Unlock-1 started in the country, negligence in personal and social behaviour has been increasing. Earlier, we were more cautious about the use of masks, 'do gaj doori' and washing hands several times a day for 20 seconds," PM Modi said.
"People have become careless since the restrictions were relaxed in Unlock 1. This exercise is to save the lives of 1.3 billion people. No one is above the norms. We now need to be more careful but it is concerning to see that people have become more careless. We need to be fully alert now. We must rebuke, stop and explain to violators," says PM Modi.
"In comparison to other countries across the globe, India is still in a very stable situation, in the battle against COVID-19. Timely decisions and measures have played a great role," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Now a ration card is also being arranged for the whole of India. The biggest benefit of this will be to those poor," PM Modi.
"More than Rs 90,000 crore rupees will be spent in this expansion of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana," says PM.
Under PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, we announced a package of Rs. 1.75 lakh crore. In the last 3 months, ₹31,000 crore deposited in bank accounts of 20 crore poor families. Also, ₹18,000 crore deposited in bank accounts of more than 9 crore farmers, the PM added.
"PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna extended till November end; 80 crore people to get free ration for five more months," said PM Modi.
