Many of the scientific instruments aboard Chandrayaan-1are of Indian make.
G Madhavan Nair said today's achievement would be written in golden letters in India's space history.
The spacecraft was placed in an elliptical orbit - at 7,500 km aposelene and 500 km periselene.
