New Delhi: India's overall coronavirus tally has surged past the 16 lakh-mark with the number of recovered patients climbing to over 10 lakh.
As per the Union health ministry, recovered Covid-19 patients in India is now 1.9 times the total active cases while the fatality rate has dropped to 2.21 per cent.
According to the Union health ministry data, India recorded the highest single-day spike of 55,079 positive cases and 779 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Maharashtra reported 11,147 new cases, its single highest addition in a day so far since the beginning of the pandemic. The highest addition until now was 10,576 on July 22. The total cases in the state has now jumped to 4,11,798.
The state also added 266 Covid-related deaths, of which 53 were from Mumbai. The total fatalities in the state were 14,726, very close to the 15,000 mark while that for Mumbai was 6,300. Mumbai added 1,208 cases on Thursday — 10.8% of the state's addition, taking the total cases to 1,13,199. After the low of 700 cases seen on July 28, cases in the city have once again seen a jump with 1,109 being reported on Wednesday and 1,208 on Thursday.
